This museum studies, researches, and displays the history and culture of Yatsushiro from various angles, including archeology, folklore, historical documents, and arts and handicrafts.
Through the permanent exhibits on Bunko Matsui, which include historical documents, paintings, ceramics, weapons, and battle gear that have been passed on by the Matsui family, lords of Yatsushiro Castle, as well as Koda ceramics and Higo sword guards, visitors can understand the history and culture bred in Yatsushiro.
On display in the entrance hall are model dolls reproducing the Shinkō procession of the Yatsushiro Myōken Festival, based on the pictures scrolls of the Edo period. Although the display is only in miniature (1:20), it is an impressive rendition of the procession with over 600 pieces.
The building is also distinctive and designed with Neo-futuristic architecture by Mr. Toyō Ito, a leading architect in Japan.
