Yatsushiro Castle, which was built in the 8th year of the Genna period (1622), and the castle town of Yatsushiro-machi both retain the appearance of the Edo period even today. The temples and shrines in the surrounding area from the time when the castle was built can still be found in the same locations, and the town distribution of that time has been passed down in the lives of the people who live there today.
In the main keep which forms the center of Yatsushiro Castle, small and large foundations for the keep and eight turrets were constructed, with the large-scale keep of the castle in the center. A large keep with a four-layered exterior and a basement was also built, but it was destroyed after being hit by lightning in the 12th year of the Kambun period (1672), and has not been rebuilt since.
Today, part of the moat and the stone wall remain. The main shrine of Yatsushiro Shrine was completed in the 16th year of the Meiji period (1883) on the ruins of the castle keep. The Yatsushiro Castle ruins are symbols of Yatsushiro’s city center, even today.
